Trimming the wick to 1/4" before lighting helps the flame burning in a consistent, healthy manner. Wicks that are too long may "loop" over and dry in the wax pool.  Untrimeed wicks can also produce a high flame, reulting in excessive soot on the inside of the jar. 

For the initial burn, trim the wick to 1/4" and allow to burn 3  hours to develop an even burn pool. This can extend the life of your candle and will prevent tunneling. Once the initial burn has been established, a candle should be burned in 1 - 3 hour intervals.  Your candle should be discarded when there is 1/2" of wax at the bottom of the jar. Burning all the way down can be a potential fire hazard.

The jar may develop soot on the inside if the wick is burning too hot. This is usually caused by the wick being too long at the time it was lit. To prevent soot, be sure to trim the wick prior to lighting your candle.  A dry paper cloth or towel can be used to wipe away any soot accumulates inside the vessel.

A candle may not burn evenly if it is extinguished before developing an even melt pool, meaning that the wax should be completely melted from side to side before extinguishing. If this happens, allow the wax to melt all the way to each side.  

Avoid burning your candles in drafty areas or in close proximity to fans or HVAC systems.
